Dr. Peter Kerr Hamilton, who joined the Pittsburg State University faculty in 1972 and served for more than a quarter century as the public address “Voice of the Gorillas”, died early Thursday morning, Aug. 6 at Freeman Hospital in Joplin, MO.

He was 65. Hamilton first took the microphone as the school’s public address announcer on Nov. 8, 1980, for the Gorillas’ regular season finale against Emporia State University . He served in that capacity for 26 seasons, fittingly retiring after Pitt State ’s regular season finale against Emporia State on Nov. 10, 2007.

Hamilton, who introduced generations of Pitt State students and fans to signature cries of “Welcome [opponent], heh, heh, heh, Welcome to the Jungle!”, “Here Come the Gorillas!”, and “First Down, Pitt State!”, also served as the public address announcer for Pitt State men’s and women’s basketball as well as for the school’s bi-annual Commencement activities.

Hamilton, who came to the United States from his native Scotland at age 8, was born Feb. 26, 1944. His family moved to Milwaukee, Wis., and he attended the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, where he earned a national championship in debate during his collegiate days. He later earned his master’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln in 1967, and his Ph.D. from the University of Oklahoma in 1972.
Hamilton served as chair of the Department of Communication at Pittsburg State University for 19 years after beginning his career at PSU in 1972, when he was hired as an assistant professor in the Department of Communication. He was named chairman of the department in 1989 and retired from PSU in May 2009.

“Not every student is a gifted athlete, but they all have special talents,” “You apply your competitive juices where they’re best fit in the classroom and in extracurricular activities. I think that’s what I’ve done over the years, and that’s what I’ve tried to instill in others.”

Survivors include Pete’s wife, Christy Herrin Hamilton of the home; two sons, Kevin Kerr Hamilton, wife, Julie, and children Kaitlin Kerr Hamilton, Caleb Kerr Hamilton and Leonard James Hamilton of Pittsburg, and Shawn David Hamilton and wife, Tonya, of Dallas; brother Ralph Briggs Hamilton of Joplin; mother Mary Kerr Hamilton and former wife Susie Hamilton of Pittsburg.

Memorial Services will be 3:00 p.m. Sunday (Aug. 9) at the First United Methodist Church with Rev Kathleen Owsley officiating. The family will receive friends in the church parlor after the service. The family suggests memorials to the Pittsburg State University Foundation Performing Arts Center. These may be left at or mailed to the Brenner Mortuary, 114 E. 4th St., Pittsburg, KS 66762. Online condolences may also be left at www.brennermortuary.com. Arrangements are under the direction of the Brenner Mortuary, Pittsburg, KS.

Magic bullet (still looking for ideal bullet), interpretational paradigm (facts and interpretation), and active paradigm: people use external and internal sources to create the messages that fit to their biases. The task is to discover the strategy that helps people to create the messages that we want them to create.
